Goodbye, Tim

I had to say goodbye today to a good friend. When I first moved to Bakersfield, California in 1984, Tim was one of the first people that I met. We were both in the 6th grade. We went to Junior High School together and then from there, we went our separate ways in High School.

It wasn’t until our Senior year we would link back up. Tim and his brother Jason had just won a Valley Championship in basketball in Division 4. I played basketball at Bakersfield High School, a Division 1 school back in the early ’90s. I was ineligible my Junior. I fell in love and couldn’t keep my studies together. That year my school won the Valley Championship and was led by the late great Mark Minniweathers. I missed out on a Valley ring.

So, when my senior year started, I was determined to win that ring. I broke up with my girlfriend and quit my job at Jack in the Box. I was focusing this year. Then, here comes Tim, walking on campus on the first day of school. He was tall and thin like he always had been, but this time he was about six-foot seven-inches. I knew the hoop team had just gotten better. He was rebounder, shot-blocker, and just an overall great human. His dad was a local Pastor here in town. We would call Tim, the “Rev”. He had a great spirit about himself and a beautiful smile.

I new this was the year to win the ring. Tim played a huge part of me having a championship ring. It is a time in my life that I will never forget. A time of my life that holds a special place in my heart.

So, although I had to say goodbye to my friend Tim today, I know that what he offered me in this world can never be taken away. We won together as young men and we won together as grown men. The world will not be the same without your presence but you sure did bring a smile to all of our faces.

Write it down. Take a picture. I don't give a f*ck!
